The Bassett Bros. is an acclaimed classical guitar duo formed by identical twins Sean and Ian Bassett. Known for their expressive musicianship, stylistic versatility, and welcoming stage presence, the San Diego-based duo performs a genre-spanning repertoire that stretches from Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces to Spanish classics, Latin American gems, original arrangements, and even inventive adaptations of rock and heavy metal—offering something for every listener.
Their musical journey began as teenagers performing in the progressive rock band Eradicate, before discovering a deep affinity for classical guitar. This early fusion of musical worlds remains central to their artistic identity: honoring classical traditions while embracing innovation and accessibility. Whether playing a Bach fugue, an Albéniz tango, or a reimagined Metallica ballad, The Bassett Bros. bring clarity, color, and connection to the concert experience.
Both brothers hold Bachelor of Music degrees in Classical Guitar Performance from San Diego State University and Master of Music degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Their academic pursuits reflect a continued commitment to musical scholarship and pedagogy. Sean earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Music Education from Boston University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Musicology at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Ian is also advancing his research and teaching practice as a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in Music Education at Boston University.
As passionate educators, Sean and Ian are on faculty at San Diego State University, Mesa College, and Grossmont College, with Sean additionally serving as an instructor at California State University San Marcos. Together, they direct classical guitar ensembles, mentor students in solo and chamber performance, and advocate for expanding classical guitar’s place in the wider musical and academic landscape.
The duo’s commitment to outreach and education extends to their growing digital presence, with performance videos and guitar tutorials available on The Bassett Bros. YouTube channel. Their mission is to break down perceived barriers around classical music by curating concerts that are both intellectually rich and emotionally engaging.
Beyond their musical lives, Sean and Ian share passions for cooking, fitness, surfing, and comic books. Their enthusiasm for storytelling and culture finds its way into their performances—and occasionally into full-costume appearances at San Diego Comic-Con.
